Rwanda Muyongwe — Washed Bourbon

Some coffees really speak to you. This is one of them.

This lot is grown in northern Rwanda, in the Gakenke region, between 1,800 and 2,000 metres — where volcanic soil, cool mountain air and slow ripening together shape the coffee's character. Nothing is rushed here. The altitude lengthens ripening, and the cherries build up their sugars slowly and deeply — which is exactly what gives this coffee the clarity and complexity that make it worth tasting.

A place where quality is tradition

The 100% Bourbon Arabica cherries are grown by more than 1,180 smallholders in the Muyongwe area, picked by hand, with patience. Processing takes place at the Muyongwe CWS washing station — a name that is a guarantee in itself.

Founded in 2007, the station has a long list of awards: Cup of Excellence 2008, 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2018, and first place in 2015. The Presidential Gold Cup in 2007, and recognition from the East African Fine Coffees Association (EAFCA) in 2009. But what lies behind the numbers says even more: sixteen years of genuine partnership with the producers — profit sharing, healthcare, training, and loans for their children's schooling. Quality here is no accident. They work hard for it, and they look after the people who create it.

Beans washed with mountain spring water, natural sun-drying, and strict quality control from harvest to export. No excess, no rush. Just clarity.

Flavour — juicy, lively, well-structured

In the cup, a full-bodied yet balanced coffee. Up front, juicy tomato and rosehip, followed by the lively acidity of ripe red berries — the kind of freshness that doesn't push, it just brings it to life. The finish is long and rich, closing with a butterscotch sweetness worth remembering.

It really shines as a filter: on a V60, Chemex or AeroPress, its layers unfold one after another. And as a cold brew, it deserves a chapter of its own — cold steeping brings out its fruitiness and caramel depth, while it pours into the glass almost tea-like in its clarity, with rounded acidity. If you were to choose just one coffee for the summer, make it this one.
